Harry Lyle was born in Liskeard, Cornwall on 6 February 1880. A Farm Labourer by occupation, he enlisted into the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 15 April 1895 and was advanced to Boy 1st Class in February 1896. Serving on H.M.S. Phaeton, he was promoted to Ordinary Seaman in February 1898 and to Able Seaman in February 1900. With the start of the Great War he was serving on the armoured cruiser H.M.S. Defence, September 1913-January 1915. Was based on H.M.S. Dido, serving on the destroyer H.M.S. Moorsom, March 1915-December 1916. Present on board the ship at the battle of Jutland, 31 May/1 June 1916, Lyle was awarded the Russian St. George Medal for Bravery for his services during the action. Lyle was awarded the L.S. & G.C. Medal in February 1920 and pensioned ashore on 5 May 1920. With copied service papers and roll extracts.
