Three: Private J. W. Swallow, Border Regiment, who was killed in action, France/Flanders, 25 October 1914

James William Swallow was born in Tinsley, Rotherham, Yorkshire. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the Northumberland Fusiliers at Rotherham in February 1906, aged 21 years. He transferred to the Border Regiment in August 1906. With them he served in Gibraltar and the East Indies until transferred to the Army Reserve in April 1913. Recalled to the Colours and serving with the 2nd Battalion, he entered France/Flanders on 5 October 1914. He was killed in action on 25 October 1914. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.
