Robert Simpson was appointed an Ensign in the 4th Regiment by purchase on 15 November 1861 and promoted to Lieutenant in January 1866. He served throughout the Abyssinian campaign 1867, and was present at the action of Arogee and the capture of Magdala (Medal). Promoted to Captain in April 1874. With the Army Pay Department, appointed Paymaster, December 1878. Appointed Paymaster (honorary Major), December 1883, attached to the Shropshire Light Infantry. Served in the Sudan campaign of 1885 (above medals). Later appointed Paymaster (honorary Lieutenant-Colonel).
