Pair: Private J. Torry, 93rd Highlanders

Crimea 1854-56, 2 clasps, Alma, Sebastopol (2955 John Torry, 93 Sutherland Highlanders) naming lightly and crudely engraved, unofficial connections between clasps; Indian Mutiny 1857-59, 1 clasp, Lucknow (John Torry, 93rd Highlanders); with 93rd Regiment ‘Crimea’ coatee button, medals edge bruising, contact marks, good fine (3) £450-550

John Torry was born in Rothiemay, near Huntly, Aberdeenshire. He attested for the 93rd Highlanders at Huntly on 13 September 1853, aged 18 years. With the regiment he served in Malta, 1 month; Turkey, 4 months; the Crimea, 2 years and India, 12 years, 4 months. In the Crimea, at the battle of Alma he was wounded by a piece of shell (London Gazette 18 October 1854). He attained the rank of Sergeant, firstly in March 1870 but was reduced to Private in June 1870; restored to the rank in July 1870 but then reduced once more in September 1870. Discharged as a Private (Lance-Corporal) in September 1874, having claimed it on the termination of his second period of service. At the time of his discharge he was in possession of the above two medals and four good conduct badges. He had been twice entered into the Regimental Defaulter’s Book and twice tried by Court Martial. With copied discharge papers and roll extracts.
