John Male was born in Dudley, Worcestershire, and attested for the 1st Royal Dragoons at Birmingham on 21 July 1843, a Fender Maker by trade, aged 29 years. He served 20 years, being 23 times in the Regimental Defaulters Book and once tried by Court Martial and imprisoned for 14 days. Most of his service was at Home with the exception of 2 years in the Crimea. He is shown in the musters as being on active duty with his regiment for the whole of the quarter of the 1st October to the 31st December 1854, and it is most probable, therefore, that he took part in the famous charge of the Heavy Brigade at Balaklava. He was discharged at North Camp, Aldershot on 20 June 1863, being unfit for further service. Sold with copied discharge papers.
