M.M. London Gazette 13 March 1919.
Citation: ‘This private showed splendid bravery and devotion to duty whilst in action at Joncourt on October 1, 1918, under heavy armour-piercing machine-gun fire, which came through the sponson. He carried on firing until severely wounded in the arm, putting out several machine-guns.’
The recipient came from Nelson, Lancashire.
In a battle on 1 October 1918 the 46th (North Midland) Division broke through the Hindenburg Line near the town of Joncourt.
With named Tank Corps certificate making reference to the above action; Fourth Army Certificate of congratulations and Fourth Army Orders in which Sunderland’s M.M. is listed. With copied m.i.c. and cap badge added for display purposes.
