M.C. London Gazette 22 June 1918. ‘2nd Lt Sidney Ernest Warburton, M.M., York. & Lanc. R.’ ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When in command of a raiding party, though wounded before reaching his objective, he continued to lead his men, himself accounting for two of the enemy, and being the last to leave the position. He afforded all ranks a most gallant example, and the success of the raid was largely due to his careful reconnaissances prior to the raid and to his coolness and good leadership during the operation.’

Private Sydney Ernest Warburton, York & Lancaster Regiment, entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 13 April 1915. As a Lance-Serjeant serving with the 1/4th Battalion he earned the Military Medal for a bombing attack on enemy positions on the Leipzid Salient during the battle of the Somme, 20 July 1916. He received a commission in the York & Lancaster Regiment on 28 May 1917. 2nd Lieutenant Warburton was awarded the M.C. for his gallantry and leadership in a raid on enemy lines at Ypres, 25 March 1918; being wounded in the process.
