Private Francis Wyler/Whyler, 4th Battalion Derbyshire Regiment, was taken prisoner at Roodeval, 7 June 1900. Later released. In the Great War Whyler attested into the 21st (Midland) Foreign Service T.F. Provisional Battalion [later Garrison] Battalion, Rifle Brigade and served in France, Egypt, Palestine and India. At the start of the Second World War, Francis Whyler, then aged 73 and wearing his medals, attempted to volunteer for the Notts T.A. - only to be told that nobody over the age of 55 could be accepted!
