Lawrence Dillon was born in Rochdale, Lancashire. A Labourer by occupation and a member of the 3rd Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers, he attested regular service with the regiment at Rochdale on 4 November 1890. With the regiment he served in India, November 1892-January 1898; Egypt and Sudan, January-October 1898; Crete, October-December 1898, and Malta, December 1898-January 1899. He was transferred to the Army Reserve in January 1899. For his services he was awarded the Queen’s and Khedive’s Medals for Sudan. In November 1899 he rejoined the Colours and with the 2nd Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers served in South Africa, December 1899-August 1902. For his services he was awarded the Queen’s medal with 6 clasps and King’s medal with two. He was discharged on 3 November 1902.

As a Labourer aged 41 years, 9 months, he attested for the Territorial Force at Rochdale on 14 September 1914. With the 2/6th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers he attained the rank of Serjeant in February 1915 and in January 1915 was appointed Signalling Instructor. He served in France, 26 February 1917-31 January 1918, transferring to the Labour Corps in October 1917 and the South Lancashire Regiment in May 1919. He was discharged on 19 December 1919 being no longer physically fit for war service and was awarded the Silver War Badge (not with lot).

With original Birth Certificate; Parchment Certificate of Discharge 1902 (2); Parchment Certificate of Character; Soldiers’ Small Book; Marriage Certificate (damaged and repaired); Discharge Certificate 1919; sketch and letters. Group comes with two studio photographs of Dillon with other soldiers and also a group photograph of Dillon in later life. Together with copied service papers; census extracts and m.i.c.
