Robert Connor was born at sea, off the coast of Newfoundland on 28 May 1834. He enlisted as a Boy Soldier in the 46th Regiment at Chester on 28 November 1848 and was given the regimental number 2546. He became a Private in the regiment in May 1849. He landed with the main body of the regiment in the Crimea on 8 November 1854, being part of the regimental band. Falling ill, he was sent to Scutari on 5 January 1855 and was only able to return to duty on 15 April 1855. From the date of his illness he ceased to be recorded as a member of the band. On 3 October 1855 he was once more evacuated ‘sick’ to Scutari and was not able to rejoin his regiment until 27 February 1856. He left the Crimea with his regiment and subsequently served in Corfu and India. Connor was promoted to Corporal in July 1860 and to Serjeant in October 1860. As such he was discharged at Buttevant on 8 July 1862. He rejoined the Army less than three months later, attesting for the 83rd Regiment at Dover on 4 September 1862 and was given the regimental number 1305. He was promoted to Corporal in April 1867 and Serjeant in October 1870. He was finally discharged on 24 February 1874. With copied service papers and roll extracts.
