Army L.S. & G.C., V.R., 3rd issue, small letter reverse (385 Sergt. Instr. J. Quirk, No. Staffs. Regt.) very fine £80-100

Joseph Quirk attested for the 60th Royal Rifles at Liverpool in April 1867. With them he served in India, September 1867-December 1878; Afghanistan, December 1878-October 1880; Marri Country, October-November 1880; India, November 1880-January 1881 and South Africa, January 1881-January 1882. His papers record that he received a ‘wound’ on 18 January 1872. He served in the Second Afghan War, the Marri Expedition and the First Boer War and was awarded the Afghanistan Medal with clasps for Ahmed Khel and Kandahar and the Kabul to Kandahar Star. Quirk was promoted to Corporal in October 1872; to Serjeant in November 1875 and to Colour Serjeant in June 1880. In July 1882 he transferred to the North Staffordshire Regiment and was subsequently awarded the Army L.S. & G.C. Medal as a Serjeant-Instructor. He was discharged in November 1889. With copied service papers.
