Army L.S. & G.C., V.R., 3rd issue, small letter reverse (87 Sergt. W. Triphook, 4-60th Rifles) minor edge bruising, good very fine £80-100

William Triphook was born in the Parish of Buckland, near Epsom, Surrey. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the 60th Rifles at Andover on 14 October 1857, aged 18 years. He was promoted to Corporal in May 1858 but was imprisoned and reduced to Private in January 1859 due to drunkenness and absence. Triphook was promoted to Corporal once more in April 1861 and then to Serjeant in January 1862. In June 1861 as part of the 4th Battalion 60th Rifles he was sent to Canada and served in the operations against the Fenians in 1866. Whilst in Canada, on 10 June 1867 Serjeant Triphook re-engaged for a further period of service. He returned to England in July 1869. Found to be medically unfit - suffering from tuberculosis, he was discharged at Dublin on 23 November 1875 having been recommended for the Army L.S. & G.C. on 15 November 1875. He died of the disease at Winchester in 1880. Had he lived, he would have been able to claim a Canada General Service Medal with clasp ‘Fenian Raid 1866’.
