Army Meritorious Service Medal, V.R. (Cr. Sgt. J. Squire, late 61st Foot) edge bruising, very fine £260-300

John Squire was born in the Parish of St. Edmunds, Salisbury, Wiltshire. A Labourer by occupation, he attested for the 54th Regiment at London on 24 June 1840, aged 18 years 6 months. He was promoted to Corporal in August 1844 and to Serjeant in March 1846. In April 1849 he volunteered for the 61st Regiment and was advanced to Colour Serjeant in March 1854. He served nearly 9 years in the East Indies and was present during the suppression of the Indian Mutiny. At the siege of Delhi, he was present at the repulse of the sorties of 4, 9 and 18 July 1857. For his services he was awarded the Indian Mutiny Medal with clasp for Delhi. Colour-Serjeant Squire was discharged with a pension at his own request on 28 June 1861. At the time of his discharge Squires was also in possession of the Army L.S. & G.C. with a gratuity of £15. Awarded the M.S.M. and an annuity of £10 on 20 August 1892. He died on 16 November 1893.
