China 1857-60 (2), no clasp (J. Phillips, Ord., H.M.S. Belleisle) impressed naming; another, no clasp (W. U. Davis, H.M.S. Chesapeake) later impressed naming, this last with slack suspension, both with slight edge bruising, very fine (2)

Joseph Phillips was born in Haverford West on 17 October 1834. Served as an Ordinary Seaman on the Belleisle during the China Campaign 1857-60. Discharged Impregnable, 3 August 1859. Having previously been sent to him on Narcissus, November 1862, his medal was sent to the man on 7 November 1888.

In the published roll, a ‘William Davis’, an Ordinary Seaman serving on the
Chesapeake, born in Edinburgh, 22 April 1840 and discharged at Fisgard, 22 April 1862, is noted as having a duplicate medal issued. Both with copied roll extracts.
