Punjab 1848-49, 2 clasps, Mooltan, Goojerat (J. Ludford, 1st Bn. 60th Rifles) some edge bruising and contact marks, nearly very fine £380-420

James Ludford was born in Hythe, Kent on 26 February 1811. He attested for the 60th Rifles at Rochester, Kent on 28 February 1825, aged 14 years and received a bounty of £2.0s.0d. With the 1st Battalion he served in Portugal, January-March 1827; Gibraltar, November 1830-October 1834, and Malta, October 1834-July 1836. Ludford was tried by Garrison Court Martial at Malta on 23 July 1835 for being ‘drunk on duty’ on 2 July 1835. He was found guilty and sentenced to 300 lashes. The 1st Battalion then served on Corfu, July 1836-April 1840 before returning to England. Ludford was promoted to Corporal in August 1844 but was reduced to Private in February 1845 - having been tried by Regimental Court Martial, again for being ‘drunk on duty’. In July 1845, with the battalion, Ludford then proceeded to India and saw service in the Second Slkh War, being actively involved in the siege and capture of Mooltan and the battle of Goojerat. He was invalided back to England in September 1849 and was discharged on 10 September 1850 being found unfit for further service. He was latterly an Out-Pensioner at Chelsea.
