Andrew Hunter Ross was born in Edinburgh, second son of George Ross, sometime Advocate and Judge of the Consistorial Court in Scotland. He was appointed Ensign in the Bengal Army on 20 January 1820, becoming Lieutenant on 6 September 1839. He was appointed to Shah Shuja’s army in March 1839 and served throughout the campaign in Afghanistan 1839-42, being engaged in all the operations of the Candahar Field Force. He commanded the 5th Regiment of Shah Shooja’s Force at the action of Ghirishk on the left bank of the Helmand River, 3 July 1841, and defeat of Akhtar Khan at Sikanderabad, 17 August (Medal). He served during the war on the Sutlej, including the battles of Moodkee, Ferozeshuhur and Sobraon (Brevet of Captain, medal and two clasps). He was appointed Brigade Major in 1848, Brevet Major in 1854 and retired in 1861. Major Ross assumed the surname Lockhart, in addition to and before that of Ross, by Royal Licence in July 1863.
