A fine Punjab Frontier I.O.M. group of four awarded to Lance-Dafadar Sant Singh, 11th Bengal Lancers (Probyn’s Horse)

Indian Order of Merit, Military Division, 1st type, 3rd Class, Reward of Valor, silver and enamel, the reverse with central nut fitting and inscribed on three lines ‘3rd Class Order of Merit’, lacking ribbon buckle; India General Service 1854-95, 1 clasp, Hazara 1891 (2171 Sowar Sant Singh, 11th Bl. Lcrs.); India General Service 1895-1902, 2 clasps, Relief of Chitral 1895, Punjab Frontier 1897-98 (2171 Lce. Duffdr. Sant Singh 11th Bl. Lcrs.); Delhi Durbar 1911, unnamed as issued, the first lacking central enamel, contact marks and edge bruising, otherwise nearly very fine (4) £4000-5000

‘11th (The Prince of Wales’s Own) Regiment of Bengal Lancers

2171 Lance-Daffadar Sant Singh (3rd Class)
2372 Sowar Wadhawa Singh (3rd Class)

Admitted to the Order of Merit for conspicuous gallantry near the entrance to the Badmanai Pass, in Bajaur, on the 17th September 1897, in having, under a very hot fire from the enemy, rescued and brought off a comrade whose horse had been shot dead under him.’

Sant Singh retired sometime between October 1908 and January 1911. His name appears on the roll for the Delhi Durbar medal as a ‘pensioned dafadar’.
