George Nott was born in Droxford on 19 January 1805, the son of Rev. Edward Nott. Commissioned an Ensign on 13 February 1821; Lieutenant, August 1824; Captain, May 1834; Brevet Major, November 1846; Major, October 1850; Brevet Lieutenant-Colonel, June 1854; Lieutenant-Colonel, October 1857, and Brevet Colonel in December 1857.
