France, Victor Broussais, 1840, a uniface cast bronze portrait medal by D. d’Angers, bust left, back stamped Eck et Durand, 175mm (Reinis 74; Storer 497; Brettauer 169; BDM I, 530). Very high relief, extremely fine and attractively patinated, very rare; with tiny piercing at top for suspension (£200-250)

François-Joseph-Victor Broussais (1772-1838), physician and medical theorist from St Malo, served as a surgeon during the Napoleonic campaigns in Italy and Spain. In 1814 he joined the Val-de-Grâce military hospital in Paris and from 1832 until his death served as professor of general pathology at the Académie de Médicine in the Université.
