France, Comte de Boissy d’Anglas, 1840, a uniface cast bronze portrait medal by D. d’Angers, bust right, back stamped Eck et Durand, 176mm (Reinis 55; BDM I, 530). A splendid portrait in high relief, extremely fine and attractively patinated, very rare; with tiny piercing at top for suspension (£200-250)

François-Antoine, Comte de Boissy d’Anglas (1756-1826), French politician and publicist; became a member of the States-General in 1789 and, as a member of the National Convention of 1792, was instrumental in establishing the first French Republic – however, he voted against the death of Louis XVI. Under Napoleon he became a senator in 1805 and later, under the restored monarch Louis XVIII, a peer of France in 1814. Illustrated on Plate II in back of catalogue
