Austria, Baron von Tegetthoff, 1872, a uniface oval cast bronze medal, unsigned, cast by Maurel Frès, bust left, cyclop juin 1872 above, 137 x 100mm. Very fine and attractively patinated, rare (£80-100)

Wilhelm von Tegetthoff (1827-71), Austrian admiral; took part in the blockade of Vienna during the Austro-Italian War, 1849; saw service at the mouth of the Danube during the Crimean campaign; aide-de-camp to Archduke Maximilian, Mexico, 1860-1; commanded the Adriatic squadron, 1862; lifted the blockade of Heligoland, 1864; won the Battle of Lissa, 1866; brought back the body of Maximilian from Juarez, 1867.
