France, Louis XIII, 10 Louis d’or à la tête laurée, col nu, 1640a, Paris (Moulin), by Jean Warin, laureate bust right, rev. crowned double ls with lis in angles, 72.48gm (VG 62; Duplessy 1294; Ci. 1607; F 405; KM. 114). Has been skilfully gilt and with minor repairs to edge, otherwise extremely fine with a superb portrait, extremely rare; the first example to have been offered at auction in England since 1987 (£15,000-20,000)

In superior condition to the specimen offered in the Gallia collection (Christie’s, 6 October 1987, lot 226), which sold for £30,000 (excluding buyers’ premium).
