John Lewin was born in Sandwich, Kent on 5 February 1839. He entered the Royal Navy in 1854. At the time of the China War he was serving on H.M.S. Scout. Latterly a Petty Officer 1st Class, he was transferred to the Coast Guard in March 1873. With copied service papers and roll extracts.
