50 South Africa Medals were awarded to the Victoria Mounted Rifles, all of them with the clasp for ‘1879’.

Formed in 1861, the unit sent a small contingent of men to Cetewayo’s coronation in September 1873. With the advent of hostilities against the Zulus, a contingent of 50 of its men saw action at the battle of Inyezane on 22 January 1879 and subsequently present at the relief of Eshowe.
