White served as 806 Private J. White in the 2nd Battalion Seaforth Highlanders for his Hazara 1888 clasp (WO 100/74 folio 125 refers). He jointed the Border Regiment as 3542 Private James Ross in 1892 and earned the Waziristan 1894-5 clasp (WO 100/75 folio 437 refers).
