Eric Nelson Macken was born in Wandsworth, Surrey on 26 February 1896, the son of Arthur and Harriett Macken. Employed before the war as a Clerk in the Port of London Authority. As a Private in the 2nd/21st (County of London) Battalion London Regiment (First Surrey Rifles), he entered France on 16 June 1916, serving there until November 1916, after which he served in Salonika, November 1916-March 1917. After training as a Cadet in No. 5 Officer Cadet Battalion at Cambridge he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the 20th (Service) Battalion King’s Royal Rifle Corps (British Empire League Pioneers) on 25 September 1917. Was wounded in the right thigh by a shell fragment at La Bassee on 14 April 1918. Promoted to Lieutenant in March 1919 and released from service in September 1919. During the Second World War he was commissioned a Lieutenant in September 1940 and promoted to Captain in October 1941.

Arthur Alan Macken was born in Gravesend, Kent, in 1923, the son of Eric Nelson (above) and Ethel Macken. Commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers. He died of wounds in North Africa, 27 August 1943. Buried at La Reunion War Cemetery, Algeria.
