John Johnston was born in Darwen, Lancashire, lived in Burnley and enlisted at Nelson, Lancashire. Serving in the 1st Battalion Essex Regiment, he entered the Balkan theatre of war on 19 September 1915. Serving in France, he was killed in action on 12 October 1916 - probably in the attack on Hilt Trench, north of Guedecourt, during the battle of the Somme. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial. With commemorative scroll and copied m.i.c. and casualty details.
