Promoted to Lance-Corporal in August 1912 and Bandsman in November 1913, he was reduced to Private in October 1913 due to misconduct. In 1910, serving at home at Kneller Hall, he was awarded a proficiency certificate for the clarinet and violin. With the 2nd Battalion he served in Malta, November 1912-June 1914; Albania, June-August 1914; Malta, August-September 1914; and France/Flanders, October 1914-January 1919. He was demobilised from the Royal Warwickshire Regiment on 22 February 1919 but re-attested for the Welsh Guards on 22 March 1919 and served as a Musician. Harvey was discharged, being ‘physically unfit for any form of military service’ on 25 January 1929.
