Samuel Frederick Worth was born in St. Andrews, Plymouth on 9 June 1870. He joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 7 December 1888 and was advanced to Boy 1st Class in November 1889. He was promoted to Ordinary Seaman in June 1891 when on H.M.S. Curlew. Serving on H.M.S. Raleigh, he was advanced to Able Seaman in February 1892 and to Leading Seaman in July 1894. He gained the rank of Petty Officer 2nd Class in November 1895 when on H.M.S. Cambridge but was reduced to Able Seaman on 12 November 1898 when on H.M.S. Edgar. Serving on H.M.S. Redpole, January 1899-June 1900, he was promoted to Leading Seaman in November 1899 and to Petty Officer 2nd Class in May 1900. On H.M.S. Undaunted, June 1900-January 1901 he saw service in Chinese waters. Ranked as Leading Seaman once more in July 1901 when at H.M.S. Vivid I. Serving on H.M.S. Hyacinth, July 1903-April 1906, he was promoted once more to Petty Officer 2nd Class in March 1904; earned the Naval Good Shooting Medal and saw service in Somaliland. Worth was promoted to Petty Officer 1st Class in November 1906 when on H.M.S. Cambridge but on the same ship in 1907 was again reduced to Leading Seaman. A further reduction to Able Seaman followed in August 1911 when on H.M.S. Blake; followed by promotion once more to Leading Seaman in February 1913 when on H.M.S. Thunderer. In June 1913 he was pensioned ashore. Joining the R.F.R. in October 1913 he was recalled in August 1914 and served as a Leading Seaman. Demobilised in February 1919.
