Private Joseph McMillan, 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders, entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 13 August 1914. Served in the 8th Infantry Brigade, 3rd Division, in Smith-Dorrien’s II Army Corps. The Gordons and the Royal Scots held the dominating Bois de Haut position at Mons. At Audencourt the Gordons and others acted as part of the rearguard but not informed of the retreat from Mons, most were captured. McMillan was one of a small number able to escape capture. With copied roll extracts and m.i.c. - clasp confirmed.
