Horace Hutchings enlisted on 14 January 1907. Serving in the 2nd Battalion Highland Light Infantry, he entered France on 14 August 1914. The battalion formed part of the 5th Infantry Brigade, 2nd Division, in Haig’s I Army Corps. They were placed near Frameries in the early fighting near Mons. They then played a major role in the defence of the Ypres Salient on 22 October 1914, near Langemarck. The 2nd H.L.I. were then involved in the recapture of Gheluvelt on 31 October 1914. Serjeant Hutchings was discharged due to wounds on 10 April 1916 and awarded the Silver War Badge (not in lot). With copied roll extract and m.i.c. - clasp confirmed.
