Private George Woodward, 1st Battalion Wiltshire Regiment, entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 14 August 1914. The Wiltshires formed part of the 7th Infantry Brigade, 3rd Division, in Smith-Dorrien’s II Army Corps. In the retreat from Mons they formed part of the rearguard at Ciply. At Le Cateau the 7th Brigade held the centre at Caudry, until retiring through Bertry and Montigny. Later in October during the battle for Ypres, the II Corps held the line from Givenchy to Rouges Bancs. With copied m.i.c. - clasp confirmed.
