Private William H. Beckinsale, 1st Battalion Royal Berkshire Regiment, entered France on 13 August 1914. Served in the 6th Infantry Brigade, 2nd Division, in Haig’s I Army Corps. Took part in the retreat from Mons. Hand-to-hand fighting on the Sambre Bridge near Maroilles. Supported the Guards Brigade’s withdrawal from Villers Cotterets. Beckinsale was discharged due to wounds on 15 March 1915 and awarded the Silver War Badge (not with lot). With copied roll extract and m.i.c. - clasp confirmed.
