Private Ernest Selfe, 1st Battalion Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, arrived in France on 12 August 1914. The battalion was placed in the 2nd Infantry Brigade, 1st Division, in Haig’s I Army Corps. Served at the battle of Troyon on the Aisne, 14 September 1914, which cost the Loyals 14 officers and 514 other ranks as casualties. Their next big battle was at Gheluvelt, 31 October 1914, where the Loyals were sent to hold the canal north of Hellebeke to Gheluvelt; only one officer and 35 men survived unscathed. Selfe was later transferred to the Royal Fusiliers. With copied m.i.c. - clasp not confirmed.
