William Riley enlisted on 14 July 1904. Serving with the 2nd Battalion Sherwood Foresters, he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 8 September 1914. The regiment was placed in the 18th Infantry Brigade, 6th Division, in Pulteney’s III Army Corps. They were on the left flank of the British line at La Bassee. Riley was discharged due to wounds on 17 July 1917 and awarded the Silver War Badge.
