Corporal William A. Stoneham, 2nd Battalion Essex Regiment, entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 22 August 1914. Served in the 12th Infantry Brigade, 4th Division, in Pulteney’s III Army Corps. At Le Cateau, the 12th Brigade was placed around Longsart and held the line there against fierce German attacks. Stoneham was transferred to the 12th Machine Gun Corps in 1915. With copied m.i.c. - clasp confirmed.
