Corporal Fred Hall, 2nd Battalion South Lancashire Regiment, entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 14 August 1914. Served with the 7th Infantry Brigade, 3rd Division, in Smith-Dorrien’s II Army Corps. At Mons on 24 August 1914, it defended against heavy German attacks at Framieres, losing nearly 300 men. Held off further attacks at Solesmes before falling back towards Caudry south of the Le Cateau-Cambrai road. Later in the centre of the British line at Le Cateau and engaged at Neuve Chapelle. Acting Serjeant Hall being wounded was discharged on 4 September 1916 and awarded the Silver War Badge (not in lot). With copied roll extract and m.i.c. - clasp confirmed.
