Charles Pratt was born at Southwick, Sussex and enlisted in 1913 at Hurstpierpoint. Serving with the 2nd Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment, he entered France on 12 August 1914 and served at the battles of Aisne and Marne. On 23 February 1915 The Mid-Sussex Times reported that he was in the 11th General Hospital suffering from frost bitten feet. On 11 May 1915 the same paper reported that Private Pratt had suffered a bullet wound to one of his feet. He was killed in action on the first day of the battle of Loos, 25 September 1915, aged 20 years. Having no known grave, his name is commemorated on the Loos Memorial. He was the son of George James and Sophia Pratt, of The White Horse Inn, Ditchling, Sussex. Sergeant Harry Wells, 2nd Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment, earned the Victoria Cross leading his men at Loos, he too was killed in action on that day. With copied research; clasp not confirmed.
