Private William Jupp, 2nd Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment, entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 12 August 1914. Served with the 2nd Infantry Brigade, 1st Division, in Haig’s I Army Corps. Caught up in the fighting along the Aisne River on 14 September 1914. Involved in the attack on the Chemin des Dames, attacking the German trenches on the Chivy Road - the battalion lost 9 officers and 255 other ranks. Jupp later transferred to the R.A.S.C. With copied m.i.c. - clasp confirmed.
