Private William Groom, 3rd Battalion Worcestershire Regiment, entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 12 August 1914. The regiment was assigned the 7th Infantry Brigade, 3rd Division, in Smith-Dorrien’s II Army Corps. The 7th Brigade was in reserve at Ciply, south of Mons. It drove back a heavy German attack at Frameries having had to put up with an artillery barrage. Later they fell back to a position near Caudry. Here as part of the British centre they were subjected to the full force of the German attack. They held on until ordered to retire through Montigny. Heavily involved in the battle for Neuve Chapelle in October 1914. With copied m.i.c. - clasp confirmed.
