Richard Ryan enlisted on 12 October 1903. Serving with the 2nd Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 23 August 1914. The unit formed part of the 12th Infantry Brigade, 4th Division, in Pulteney’s III Army Corps. They were deployed around Longsart and were later attacked by the German 2nd Cavalry Division but held firm despite heavy losses. Ryan was discharged due to wounds on 28 May 1917 and awarded the Silver War Badge (not with lot). With copied m.i.c. - clasp not confirmed.
