Thomas Smailes was born and lived in Dipton, Durham and enlisted at Stanley, Durham. Serving in the 1st Battalion King’s Own Scottish Borderers, he entered the Balkan theatre of war on 29 April 1915. He died of wounds, France/Flanders on 26 October 1916 and was buried in the Guards Cemetery, Lesboeufs. With copied m.i.c. and casualty details.
