John Murray enlisted on 8 July 1903. Serving with the 2nd Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers, he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 22 August 1914. The unit formed part of the 12th Infantry Brigade, 4th Division, in Pulteney’s III Army Corps. The brigade was thrown straight into the fray at Le Cateau, being placed around Longsart. Opposed to them was the German 2nd Cavalry Division which tried to capture Esnes but failed to break the brigade. Murray later transferred to the Leicestershire Regiment, from which he was discharged due to wounds on 11 July 1917. Awarded the Silver War Badge (not with lot). With copied roll extract and m.i.c. - clasp confirmed.
