Alfred James Cole enlisted on 12 January 1904. As a Private in the 1st Battalion Royal Fusiliers, he entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 7 September 1914. His battalion formed part of the 17th Infantry Brigade, 6th Division, III Army Corps. The 6th Division reached the Aisne on 16 September 1914 and participated in the defence of Armentieres during September/October 1914. From there they moved to the trenches at Messines. In the Somme campaign the unit was with 17th Brigade in the 24th Division. They fought around Longueval in September 1916. Cole was discharged through wounds on 12 October 1916 and was awarded the Silver War Badge (not with lot). With copied roll extract and m.i.c. - clasp confirmed.
