Private William G. Spong, 1st Battalion The Queen’s Regiment, entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 12 August 1914. The regiment formed part of the 3rd Infantry Brigade, 1st Division, in Haig’s I Army Corps. Heavily involved at Ghelevelt on 31 October 1914 during the 1st Battle of Ypres where they defended the Menin Road. With copied m.i.c. - clasp confirmed.
