Private Albert Burden, 9th Lancers, entered the France/Flanders theatre of war on 26 August 1914. Served in the 2nd Cavalry Brigade. The regiment was held at the rear at Le Cateau, on 26 August, the day Burdon arrived. On 7 September the 2nd Cavalry Brigade was on the right flank in the advance against the crossing of the Grand Morin Canal on the Marne River. The 9th Lancers were in the van and attacked and took the village of Moncel. Coming up against German cavalry, this was the last battle, lancers fought lancers. On 30 October the 9th Lancers helped defend Messines. With copied m.i.c. - clasp confirmed.
