George Frederick Whitaker enlisted into the Life Guards on 28 December 1910, aged 18 years, 8 months. He had been a Tailor before enlistment. Was married to Gladys Emily Whitaker and lived at 63 St.James Place, Plumstead, South East London. Served in France from 16 August 1914 with the Household Cavalry Composite Regiment in the 4th Cavalry Brigade in Allenby’s Cavalry Division. Was at Ypres in 1915. He later trained as a Signaller and was attached to the Cavalry Corps as such in January 1916. On 30 June he was attached to the 1st Signal Troop of the Royal Engineers, being officially transferred over to the Royal Engineers in October 1916 where he qualified as a Telegraphist/Wireless Operator, and he was attached to the Cavalry Corps Signals Squadron as a Sapper. He then joined the GHQ of the Wireless Unit, RE in February 1917, but returned to the Cavalry Corps (Wireless squadron) in February 1918. Discharged 28 February 1919.
