He was, in his younger days a keen Territorial, and was one of the party who went to Windsor Castle in 1909 to receive the new Territorial Colours at the hands of the late King Edward V11. He took his discharge in July 1913.
Provost Middlemas was in the front rank as a rifle shot, and won many prizes at Bisley.
On the outbreak of the War in 1914, he joined the recruiting staff at Kelso Town Hall, and when the 1st Volunteer Battalion was formed as a war battalion, he was appointed as Quartermaster, ultimately resigning in 1917 after over 42 years of service. Provost Middlemas was for some time a member of the Territorial Army Association of Roxburgh, Berwickshire and Selkirkshire but resigned this year on account of ill health.
He was in possession of the Volunteer Long Service Medal and Coronation Medals.
The funeral took place at Kelso on 9th September 1933.’
