Company Serjeant-Major Herbert Montgomery Masson, 1st/16th Battalion London Regiment (Queen’s Westminster Rifles), entered France on 1 November 1914. He was mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 1 January 1916). Company Serjeant-Major Masson was killed in action on the First Day of the Battle of the Somme, 1 July 1916 as the battalion attacked south of the Gommecourt Salient.
