NX37684 Private Ernest Arthur Butler, 2/6th Independent Company, Australian Army, was killed in action in New Guinea, 20 September 1943. He was buried in Lae War Cemetery, Lae, Morobe Province, Papual New Guinea.

The 2/6th Independent Company was raised in May 1942, becoming the 2/6th Commando Squadron. The 2/6th’s main role was to conduct irregular type warfare including small scale raiding, sabotage, long-range patrolling and reconnaissance operations. For the most part this involved small groups operating inside enemy-held territory or in advance of larger friendly units.
